The European Committee for Standardisation (CEN) has developed a draft of European standard (EN 17216), which aims at providing a reference method for the determination of the activity of the radionuclides Ra-226, Th-232 and K-40 in construction products using semiconductor gamma-ray spectrometry.
The Joint Research Centre (JRC) of the European Commission recently published the report of an interlaboratory assessment which validates the precision of this method. This is an important step towards the publication of EN 17216 as an European Standard and as the reference method to support the performance assessment (CE marking) of construction products.
