ENA at NORM X

ENA contributed to the NORM X symposium in Utrecht with three lively sessions addressing topical NORM issues in industry, environment or building materials.

ENA was represented both in the opening as in the closing session of the symposium. Thanks to the diligent work of our secretary, an introductory leaflet to ENA was distributed to the visitors of our booth.

The NORM X symposium fostered ENA mission of promoting and advancing radiation protection in the context of exposure to NORM.

  • All presentations of NORM X symposium are available through IAEA Orpnet website: NORM X presentations

ENA conferred its second Young Professional Award to Michael Streicher (USA) for his excellent presentation on drone-based waste characterization. So encouraging to see a new generation of experts ready to deal with the challenges of NORM management !

ENA Stipend now open for application

ENA is glad to announce that such a stipend is now available. It may cover, for example, travel expenses to attend a scientific conference, living expenses during a limited period of time to complete a thesis or other piece of scientific work, or the cost of material for a research project. The amount would typically be a few 1000 € and depends on the specific needs and requirements that must be outlined in the application.

The application procedure will not be overly formal. However, for good order’s sake, ENA requests applicants to submit, as a minimum, the following:

  1. Cover letter detailing the motivation to apply for the ENA stipend
  2. CV with a clear indication of the applicant’s scientific background in the field of NORM
  3. Description of the scientific work for which financial assistance is sought, including a brief description of the status quo, the proposed work and activities, and the objective to be achieved using the stipend.
  4. An outline of the costs and expenses for which ENA funding is requested.

Please note that the furtherance of ENA objectives must be demonstrated in the application. See the ENA statutes at our website.

We encourage young scientists and their supervisors to apply.

Eligibility provided, stipends will be awarded on a quarterly basis. Deadlines for applications are the last day of every quarter. Applications will then be reviewed and applicants will be informed about the decision or additional information may be requested.

Membership in ENA is not a precondition of the stipend. Although applicants do not necessarily have to be members of ENA, some demonstrated relationship of their supervisors, working group and/or institution with ENA is considered an asset. ENA also expects that successful applicants will become member of ENA.

We are looking forward to receiving high-quality applications. Please send your application with all documents attached to secretary@ena-norm.eu and we will confirm the reciept.

ENA 2020, the 2nd workshop of the European NORM Association is now history

The 2nd ENA workshop 2018 was successfully held in collaboration with the Österreichische Agentur für Gesundheit und Ernährungssicherheit GmbH (AGES). About 90 participants met in different video conference rooms to listen to exciting lectures and interesting developments on radiation protection in connection with naturally occurring radioactivity. Many thanks to the entire team at AGES (Vienna), who managed that we were all VIRTUALLY TOGETHER.

We are proud and happy that the ENA has developed into a lively, vibrant organization with many points of contact for practitioners, authorities and scientists. Our 2nd workshop has brought together first class NORM experts with excellent, practice-focused presentations.

Update: The second ENA workshop is over and you will find access to the presentations via the announcement section of our ENA social web. For non-members please contact secretary@ena-norm.eu

Announcement 2nd ENA Workshop, Vienna 2020

We are very excited to announce the next ENA Workshop which will be held on 20-22 October 2020 in Vienna and will be hosted by AGES (Austrian Agency for Health and Food Safety). This conference can be attended by members and non-members of the ENA, though members will enjoy some extra benefits, such as a reduction of the attendance fees and participation in the working groups.

In the same period of the ENA Workshop, the IAEA will organize an IAEA NORM Conference in Vienna that is aimed at developing guidelines to member states in topics similar to in the ENA Workshop. ENA and IAEA are planning to organise some common events to add benefit for participants who will attend both events.

For more information and updates please visit the website of AGES for the ENA Workshop 2020 and additional information on this website.

Retrospect to the 1st ENA workshop 2018

The 1st ENA workshop 2018 was successfully held in collaboration with the Główny Instytut Górnictwa (GIG) and the IAEA ENVIRONET. More than 90 participants from former EANNORM, EU-NORM, COST-Network NORM4BUILDING and ENVIRONET as well as from the local hosting institution GIG made this workshop a great and special event with lots of networking opportunities, interesting talks and possibilities to meet practitioners in the field of NORM.

The ENA board members want to express their gratitude to the hosting institution GIG, the organizing committee, the speakers as well as to all participants that made this great event happen.

Impressions from the 1st ENA workshop in Katowice, Poland

Foundation of ENA

The European NORM Association (ENA) has been formed by merging the European NORM networks EANNORM and EU NORM and was also based on the NORM4Building consortium.

The Statutes of ENA and the Code of Ethics can be downloaded here.

The European NORM Association (ENA) is a platform of experts from:

  • industry operators and industry associations that are dealing with natural radioactivity in their raw materials, processes and residues;
  • governmental and regulatory authorities in the field of radiation protection;
  • service providers such as laboratories and consultants;
  • research and scientific organisations.

The new association will be stronger and more efficient and avoid duplication of efforts. ENA brings together European expertise in the field of NORM and is expected to be recognised as a counterpart for the industry, research and politics at the European level as unbiased consultation for new regulations and guidelines.

The 1st ENA and 9th EANNORM Workshop will be held from 19th to 23rd of November 2018 at the Central Mining Institute of Katowice, Poland. The call for paper is available here.

Mission Statement and Objectives of ENA

Promote and advance radiation protection in the context of exposure to NORM by operating as a European platform and forum for discussion, dissemination and exchange of information, training and education and by supporting scientific knowledge and new directions of research related to NORM issues.

The overarching objective of the ENA is to support the management of NORM in compliance with European standards and Member State legislation and according to best practice so that legal and regulatory uncertainty is minimised, and humans and the environment are protected in an optimised way that is acceptable to society.

Activities

ENA’s activities include, but may not be limited to, the following:

  • Conferences: format similar to EU NORM Symposia
  • Workshops: format similar to EANNORM workshops
  • Network of specialist throughout EU, possibly continuing the Contact Points known from EANNORM
  • Unbiased counterpart at EU level for regulations and guidelines
  • Close links to “NORM industry” associations
  • Strong relationship with IRPA and national RP associations
  • Links with ERA and other networks
  • Interest of IAEA to continue close collaboration, e.g., through the ENVIRONET NORM Project

Working Groups (WG) will be set up to focus on priority areas of interest. The following WG have been discussed during the EU NORM Symposium in Teddington/UK (2nd – 5th October 2017):

Membership

Membership is open to individuals and organisations, see membership fee schedule. Membership benefits include the following:

  • Opportunity to join one or more Working Groups (WG) and regular update on developments in the WG
  • Access to a contact database of NORM experts from industry, academia, laboratories, consultancies and regulators across Europe (formerly called “Contact points” under EANNORM)
  • Discount of 10% on registration fees of Workshops, Symposia and other events
  • Free access to conference papers and presentations of the last EANNORM and EU NORM events

Download the membership application form, complete and send it to spepinENA@gmail.com (treasurer) or secretary@ena-norm.eu

Foundation status

ENA has been registered at a Notary Public in Brussel on 27th September 2017 as an International Non-Profit Association under Belgian law (ASBLI – Association sans but lucratif internationale). The Statutes have been published in the Official Gazette of Belgium on April 16, 2018. Both legal and natural persons are invited to become members.
